Swinging like the gum trees flinging round my window
Give it one more push and I might fall
Never felt the carpet slip out from below
And I thought that I would always have it all
I felt I was on a road that ran out from my sight
And I saw everyone I know crossing a bridge too wide
And in a hasty mess I jumped around and up and down
They just passed me off as some old clown
Frozen like a portrait locked within a basement
Where the thrown out clocks would sit and sigh
Televisions talking, cigarettes all sing
And I felt so sad and lonesome I could cry
We've been taking photos of the shiny plastic
That had washed ashore some time ago
As you turned he saw you take your eyes away
And he left you as he yelled "I told you so!"

There's a flood by the mountain cutting into the banks and the plains
Where once it was silent now roaring its chorus from the rain
And you can't stop the sound
From rushing into your land
Better head for higher ground
Or nothing, no nothing, will go to plan
There's a pine in the forest leaving all that's below it for dead
It's growing so tall it is covering the words that I said
But when it will fall it will crack and will split into four
It will open the skies and the forest will rise like before
So watch for the bandits that will steal from the good in your town
They pretend to be holy while holding your head to the ground
As soon as the first bell will signal it's your time to go
And leave all the things that will hinder your memory of home

Familiar cliché

It's been a long time, a long time a comin'
Since all the stars were aligned
Formed into ways that would show us the way home
Now I don't pay them any mind
'Coz I'm leaving the maps on the cold bedroom floor
They're no longer use to me
One step at a time, a familiar cliché
Is sometimes just all that I need
Lately it seems I've been trying to replay
The scenes from some magical film
Thinking if I could project it on some wall
Then maybe I'd believe that it's real
And with the sunrise the world keeps a turnin'
Though I've forgotten the day
I'm tired and travelled and missing my old home
But I know there's no other way

Who's to blame for this mess, for the hearts in a wreck?
For the children who do not know they are damned?
They will stumble through this world, oh these poor lost boys and girls
Lord I pray that they would find a way back home
Lord I pray that they find a way back home
That they'll turn from all the roads that leave them stoned
And when it rains let them know they're not alone
Lord I pray that they find a way back home
In the dark old court room came the familiar tune
Of a song sung by a blind man on the street
And in deciding who to blame, they placed bitterness and shame
On the very ones whose lives were in defeat
If you stare into my heart, you will see it's split apart
For the man I am who I want to be
Is it selfishness or pride, and will I take it in my stride?
And will I pray that they find a way back home?

It’s a great old world that we’ve forgotten
And left to age in peace alone
Still the key is right beside them
But we don’t have the strength to let it go
My sweetheart sat among the flowers
And in her hand she held my heart
We would dance by falling towers
We would hold to our hope and never part
I sit and write by the fire
Grateful for all that's given to me
When I'm old and I retire
All I want is the simple love of thee

Well the bird is on the sky way and the pen is in my hand
My thoughts are getting greener but my shoes are full of sand
And you've been whispering to me like a flower in the field
But I've been searching for a sword that I could never wield
It's unclear where all this water flows
By the riverside you'll find my ghost
Calling you back home
So the lion's in the doorway and the wolves are getting on
A wrecking ball is flying to an old Pete Seeger song
All the junkies in the alleys try to feed me with a spoon
Saying "eat your own humility and watch the ladies swoon!"
There's a sparkle in the star light, there's a sea below the clouds
There's a seedling in the pavement, there's a child lost in the crowds
We've packaged up our beauty and it's ready to consume
We've been told we need to win more but I think I wanna lose

All of the sneers from the foghorn ears
Rested so gently below
The newspaper dreams torn apart at the seams
But there's always some that we keep
Force feeding loonies parading George Clooney's
Looking so sinless and true
And they're scripting their stories in gold and in glories
To make you think you need skin too
You swore you would never turn your back
Tell me how you keep your soul intact
If you were me and I fell into you
Would I go back to loving you?
The sidewalk saviour said "I'll see you later"
But left you with cue cards that read
"If the sign's leading forwards then I could use more words
To untie this mangled old thread"
And Johnny Joe Somethin' is master of nothing
But doesn't he do it so well?
And he smiles like a thief with his honeycomb teeth
As he's swinging and ringing that bell
Eleven years later and I would still wager
On a poet still holding his pen
And who knows baby but someday maybe
I could remember back then
When the sun rose so high amongst the innocent sky
And the dirt 'neath our feet was at peace
Though the sidewalk would scream
And would crack and careen
We both knew that the shiver would cease

Sometimes one man can send a whole world spinning
For me it only takes a thought
I turn until I'm back at the beginning
And that is where I fall apart
But at times I hold my faith in wonder
And my heart feels like a stone
Can you turn my grey back into colour?
The life that I regret had gone
In the morning of December
I made a vow to the skies
I made a promise to remember
You're the keeper of my time
The lonely only feel the warm of summer
Resting on their tired skin
But I not only want to feel the sun
Her kisses are a lonely end
You're the only one to touch the silence
With a gentle melody
So sing into the dark and rip down the fence
You're my only remedy

Silver lining

Blue bird, when will the springtime lead you home?
I've been waiting to wake up to your call
There's a hollow in the middle of my heart
That feels a little less full now we're apart
Winter left me alone within my thoughts
I've been freezing, stone cold in the frost
There's a flower climbing to reach my weary soul
Coming 'tward to carry me back home
When the land slips underneath me
Passing through the cracks in my feet
And I feel it pull under my skin
I will dig my heels in so deep
That the earth below me will weep
And I will hold my ground until the spring
Broken, I was left battered by the storm
I've been holding out on you too long
Sorrow billowed and poured out from my eyes
Now I know I can't ignore the signs
I felt the heat of the season fall away
I've been drifting deep into the dirt
It was after the sun fell I heard you call my name
I was mixed up in the joy and the hurt and the shame
But with a crack of a roar and thunder
I gave in to a natural wonder
And I drifted back to where I'd been
Now I see the world with wide eyes
That can look beyond my grey skies
To the silver lining in some dream
